Every week we hear from customers whose sat-nav have been stolen, lost, stopped working or are corrupted and who are desperately looking for a way to get their ‘favourites’ back.
Unfortunately, up until now when they were gone they were gone forever.

What’s more this is happening a lot more often than you would think.

But now, we have the solution – Backup!

You can take a full backup of all your favourites on your sat-nav and store them on myPOIs. We will keep your 3 most recent backups so if anything does ever go pear-shaped, you will be able to restore your backup to your sat-nav in a matter of seconds.

Backup is a doodle to use and only takes a few seconds. We will even remind you when you should backup.

Just yesterday, I met the National Sales Manager of a retail chain who had dropped his sat-nav. He lost the locations of all the stores, supplier details and other client information he had painstakingly added to his device. Last week, we were dealing with a doctor’s surgery that had lost all the locations of their patients.

Regular backups of your sat-nav makes a lot of sense, especially if you are using it for work. It can really save you a lot of stress and hassle somewhere down the road.

The Backup facility is part of the Premium and Premium + subscriptions but can also be bought on it’s own for less then €10.

So what should you watch out for....

No related posts.

It’s a fact that Irish consumers pay more than a lot of their European neighbours and with everyone tightening their purse strings coming up to Christmas it may seem a logical choice to buy from international online discount superstores. Sometimes you can save between €20-50 but what a lot of people are not aware of are the hidden costs that may occur.

So what should you watch out for….

.ie domains – often these online discount superstores have .ie domains (for example pixmania.ie, expansys.ie) but actually have no presence in Ireland at all and even some stores that claim an Irish presence don’t hold stock and have it shipped in when you purchase it. So if you want to buy from an Irish store, make sure that there is an Irish address, the company is registered in Ireland, carries stock and there is someone at the end of the phone to talk to.

Warranty – what are they offering? Probably a full manufacturer’s warranty but where are the manufacturers based and what is the stores return policy? If you have a fault with your system, you will have to fork out to get it shipped back (most likely outside of Ireland) to the online store or manufacturer for a warranty replacement. Under the Sale of Goods Act when you purchase from an online store, your contract is with the store and it is their responsibility to sort out your problems – try explaining this to a customer support representative based in France.

Support – can they help you with your purchase? Probably not. When you decide to spend a couple of hundred euros on a electronic device you want to make sure that you are buying the right product for you. Larger online stores tend to not be able to provide you with this service.

eBay – a number of manufacturers will not provide warranties when their products are purchased on eBay.

I’m not telling you not to buy from these online discount superstores but merely advising you of the risks.

We have added two more brands on to mysatnav.ie which we think are high quality systems - TomTom and RAC.

No related posts.

For a while we were only selling Garmin products because we felt that they were the most efficient and sophisticated GPS devices on the market …until now! We have added two more brands on to mysatnav.ie which we think are high quality systems – TomTom and RAC.

TomTom Go x30 series

The TomTom Go x30 series is a plug & play, widescreen, lightweight, easy to use GPS with a high sensitivity GPS receiver. With clear voice instructions and a high quality touchscreen this GPS allows you to plan your itineraries with ease and choose the route you want. Unique features on this TomTom range are:

IQ Routes – Calculates your route based on the real average speeds measured on roads.

TomTom MapShare technology -Make corrections to your own maps and benefit from thousands of corrections made by TomTom users everyday.

RAC 300 + Route 66

With the demise of the Airis T920, we have always been on the look out for a similar lost-cost navigator that uses the excellent navigation software from Route 66 and we think we have found it in the RAC 300.

The RAC 300 features the latest Navteq Q3, 2008 mapping (equivalent to Garmin’s 2009 mapping). The Route 66 software continues to be one of the best GPS navigation packages available with the easiest street searching functions that we have come across.

New additions to the Garmin nüvi family are preloaded with 2009 (version 11) maps. Read on to find out more...

No related posts.

Garmin have released a few new addtions to their nuvi range, all of which come preloaded with the latest 2009 (version 11) maps.

nüvi265 nüvi265w

Much like their predecessors, the nüvi 255 and nüvi 255w, these systems are both simple to use, low cost personal in car navigators with the exception that they have Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free calling.

nüvi765

The nüvi 765 is the latest addition to the 700 series. So what makes this different from the nüvi 760? The nüvi 765 has a brand new feature called Lane Assist, providing drivers a clear illustration of what lane they should be in when approching busy intersections or when navigating through unfamiliar cities.

myPOIs.ie and Pumps.ie have announced the availability of daily fuel price updates for Garmin sat-nav users.

No related posts.

myPOIs.ie and Pumps.ie have announced the availability of daily fuel price updates for Garmin sat-nav users. For the first time in Ireland users will now be able to download regular fuel price updates directly onto their sat-nav from www.mypois.ie.

www.pumps.ie is Ireland’s No. 1 and definitive online source of up to day service station fuel prices and price analysis. Entirely community driven, the web site receives over 300 fuel price updates on a weekly basis.

“It’s all about giving the best service and information we can to our subscribers. We are delighted to have teamed up with Pumps.ie. Fuel prices are an emotive topic and with significant price differences at service stations, often within the same geographic area, substantial savings can be made by simply shopping around. This service gives our subscribers information when they most need it and should put a few euro back in their pockets each week!”, said John Dundon for myPOIs.ie.

“There are huge benefits to everyone by having our information on mobile devices such as sat-navs,”, said Jonathan Dean of Pumps.ie. ”This partnership with myPOIs.ie means that we now have a database of over 1,500 service stations in Ireland with accurate locations.”

Both companies have further plans to enhance the service over the next few months to add details such as opening hours and facilities available at the service stations.

You can now download all the Garda Speed Enforcement Zones. Read on to find out how...

No related posts.

Finally completed the task of getting all the new Garda Speed Enforcement Zones (Sez) into our database. What was taking the time was working out the direction of each zone.

So you can now download the complete set of the Garda Speed Enforcement Zones to your Sat-Nav from www.mypois.ie. Sorry but for the moment this only works with Garmin sat-nav. There are full instructions on the site about what you have to do.

There are no speed limit details with any of the zones (presumably because there are several limits in each zone) however if any one out there wants to collect this information and share it with the rest of our community, we’ll be happy to add the details to our database. Send an email to submissions@mypois.ie with the zone identifier e.g. WW010 (Zone 10 in Co. Wicklow) and the speed limit/s.

We will likely tweak the dataset over the next few days so maybe refresh your sat-nav at the end of the week.

Over 800 Garda Speed Enforcement zones were launched yesterday as incentive to stop road accidents on Irish roads....

No related posts.

Yesterday, as reported on RTE Evening News, Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy launched eight new speed detection vans in Templemore, Co. Tipperary as part of An Garda Siochana’s Road Safety Strategy 2007 -2012. The aim of this strategy is to reduce road collisions, deaths and injuries on Irish roads.

After an extensive analysis in conjuction with the National Roads Authority, the Garda have identified over 800 speed enforcement zones which are based on collision histories where speed was a major contributor. A full list is also available on their web site. The aim is to provide “information to motorists in order to raise awareness of speeding in these zones”.

To view the Garda Speed Enforcement Zones on www.mypois.ie, click here.

To see details of zones, the easiest way is to search by county using the ‘Find on map’ facility at the top of the web page.

Later today, the speed zones will be available for download onto Garmin sat-nav devices from www.mypois.ie. There will be alerts when entering and leaving a zone and the zone heading (North, South etc.). There is no charge for this download. You can also download Road Safety Authority Danger Zones which are based on 2005 accident data.

We will update the blog once the download is ready to go.

What can you legally have on your GPS?

No related posts.

While surfing the internet, I came across an Irish website that is selling Snooper Radar Detectors and stating that they are perfectly legal to use in Ireland, which brings us to the question that we have been frequently asked here at mysatnav – are these devices legal or illegal in Ireland?

These are laser devices used by drivers to detect mobile safety cameras and alert the driver if their speed is being monitored by the Gardai. Although they are legal in some countries, the UK being one, they are completely illegal to use in Ireland. In fact, the mere existence of a radar detector in a car, even if switched off can attract confiscation and/or a hefty fine. The reason why these radar detectors are illegal is because they interfere with a Garda officer’s ability to carry out his duties.

Check out the Irish Statute Book to see the offical regulation.

On a more positive note, it is definitely not illegal to have the positions of safety cameras on you GPS device. In December 2007 while being interviewed on RTE’s Morning Ireland about the introduction of safety cameras in Ireland, Eddie Rock, Assistant Commissioner of the Traffic Corps said that he has no issue with GPS devices showing locations of these cameras.

To view and download the latest mobile and fixed safety camera locations go to www.mypois.ie

No related posts.

A feature on Morning Ireland on RTE today highlights that sat-navs send drivers clockwise around the Ring of Kerry whereas the anticlockwise route is ‘more’ correct. Major congestions are being caused by larger vehicles going both clockwise and anti clockwise, this due to the narrow bottleneck roads on the route. It is for this reason why there is an unoffical rule that all larger vehicles take the anti clockwise direction.

In order to make changes on a sat nav system, a submission needs to submitted to the 2 major digital mapping companies (Navteq and TeleAtlas). From previous experiences we know that it will probably take 2 years before you start seeing any changes on the sat nav device.

But have no fear as a there is a solution on www.mypois.ie where you can download the Ring of Kerry anti-clockwise route for free!

We have had a few customers that have been having problems with their nuvi 7xx series and their device freezing during routes. After inspecting a few systems and noticing a fault we got on to Garmin who have confirmed that there is a bug in the new firmware update for the 7xx series (version 3.10).

So, anyone who has not updated their system, hold off doing so. Anybody who has updated to version 3.10 will need to revert back to version 3.0

To revert back to 3.0

Following on from the quiet launch of the TICodes location code system late last year, GPS Ireland have finally released their version of an Irish postal code system (PONC) on 16th of June. You can receive your TICode from http://www.ticodes.ie and PONC code from http://www.irishpostcodes.ie.

The concept behind both systems is very similar – each company has develop their own algorithm to convert a geographic latitude/longitude pair to an easy-to-remember 7 character alphanumeric code. A clear objective of both companies has to be that their system will ultimately be accepted by the relevant authorities as the de facto postal code system for Ireland.

A quick review of both sites is that it is easy and quick to retrieve your TICode. The web site is straighforward to use and one of the clever features is that you can search for your TICode based on typing in your address (it even allows you to lookup based on house name) so there is no need to use online maps, which can be inaccurate, to determine your TICode. There is a basic interface to download TICodes to most Garmin sat nav.

www.irishpostcodes.ie, on initial impression, is more difficult to follow. Furthermore, to retrieve your PONC code it should not be necessary to submit your email address (or at the very least it should be made optional). For those with Garmin nuvi 700 sat-nav you will be able to do full look-ups of PONC codes but you will need a software update from GPS Ireland to do this.

Both location systems are in beta testing at present so there should be more news from TICode and GPS Ireland in the coming months.

The European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation into TomTom’s proposed acquisition of TeleAtlas. The EC feels that the merging of the two Dutch companies raises vertical competition concerns and whether this transaction would significantly disrupt effective competition within the European Economic Area.

TomTom, one of the leading producers of portable navigation devices in Europe, put a bid in for TeleAtlas, one of the two producers of navigable digital maps, last year outbidding TomTom’s rival Garmin. The European Commission’s main concern is whether this affliation would increase the costs of other PND manufacturers for digital maps or limit the access to the maps, and as a consequence harm consumers.

The merger for TomTom would give them a significant hold on the car GPS market as they would now not only be hardware producers but software too.

At only 60 grams, this new stylish compact GPS device is both a watch and a personal trainer. Available in two colours – black and sage green – the Forerunner 405 fits in at the gym, the office or out on the town.

The Forerunner 405 is easy to use, by simply tapping, holding or running your finger along the touch bezel (the silver ring around the display) the runner can begin a new workout or access any of their Training History.

After you have finished your workout, you can transfer all you training history from your watch to your computer thanks to the innovative ANT+Sport™ wireless technology. So that means no messy cables or connections – when the Forerunner is in range of the computer the training info automatically transfers over.

The following is a solution to the “Can’t Unlock Maps” problem that a few Garmin nuvi 770 owners out there are experiencing.

Go to the Garmin website and register you nuvi 770

In your MyGarmin account, you will be able to obtain unlock codes for you GPS system. Please note that there will be two unlock codes for the nuvi 770, one for Europe and one for North America

Copy your unlock codes, one at a time in lowercase with no spaces or characters and save them into two separate notepad files. (For all those non-techie folk out there, you will find your Notepad on your PC in Start, Programs, Accessories, Notepad.)

Save the Europe unlock code as gmapprom.unl and the North America unlock code as gmapprom1.unl. If you are asked would you like to replace existing files, click yes.

Connect your nuvi to the PC and open it up on My Computer.

In the Garmin folder, paste these two new files.

Disconnect you nuvi and then switch it on. Your maps should now be restored.

After several months of very hard work by a lot of people, we have finally launched our new web site, www.myPOIs.ie, which is entirely dedicated to points of interest (POIs) around Ireland.

The main purpose of the site is to address the woeful lack of POIs for Ireland available on Garmin and other brands of satellite navigation systems. We have collected POI data from a variety of sources and have spent a considerable amount of time verifying the locations using the latest geocoding techniques. While it is not possible to guarantee 100% accuracy – we are confident that a very high percentage of the locations are bang on.

Currently the site has 15,000 POIs, we have a further 10,000 to release in the coming months and more later in the year. POI databases include Road Safety & Camera information for the Republic and Northern Ireland, Industrial Estates, Hotels, Restaurants, Bank Branches & ATM locations, Pubs & Bars, Garda Stations, Post Offices, Shopping Centres, Pharmacies, Schools and so on. There is a long list! We are also working with a number of 3rd party data providers, such as the Georgina Campbell Guides, to offer sat nav users the very best in quality POI databases for Ireland under one roof.

A number of the POI databases are available free of charge to download to your sat nav (only Garmin GPS for now) and for others POI databases there is an annual subscription. While we would have liked to have offered everything for free, the reality is that to offer this level of quality and breadth of POI data, it is just not possible to do so without incurring significant costs in the time collecting and verifying the location data. This really is and has been a mammoth task.

What we have done though is to make the annual subscriptions charges as low as possible – our ‘Premium’ service which includes all our databases excluding the Road Safety Camera database is available for €37.00 per annum while our ‘Premium+’ service, which includes all POI databases + Road Safety Camera database, is available for €50.00 per annum. When you subscribe to any of the services you can download as often and as many times as you like – there are no constraints or limits.

For those of you who are considering purchasing a GPS from us or updating your current model there is an offer of €12 for the ‘Premium’ service and €25.00 for the ‘Premium+’ service for the first year.

Please get in touch with us if you want to find out more or if you would like to submit you own POI data or if you have any suggestions how we could improve the service. Thanks.

Garmin recently released firmware update 2.6 for the Garmin nuvi 700 series. This is an essential download for anyone who has had problems with the length of time it takes their GPS to obtain a satellite fix.

The firmware update, which can be downloaded here Firmware Version 2.6 , includes SiRFInstantFixII to speed up the time to fix, provided that certain conditions are met.

The Garmin nuvi 7xx series uses the high sensitivity SiRFstarIII chipset, but you also need good quality signals. The design of the nuvi 7xx series where the receiver is now positioned on the back of the unit unlike the ‘flip-up’ patch antenna, that worked very well on the nuvi 3xx and 6xx series, has meant that the RF interference of the screen and other electronic components of the GPS has compromised the quality of the GPS signals.

Normally, in order that your GPS requires a good satellite fix, live emphemeris data needs to be downloaded from the satellites to your device and this requires a strong GPS signal plus at least 30 seconds. To overcome this constraint, the SiRFInstantFixII download, effectively uses predicted emphemeris data that is built up over the duration that you have your GPS switched on. The other requirement is that you use your GPS regularly as the predicted emphemeris data is only valid for 3-4 days so it needs to be constantly refreshed if you want quick, sub 20 second fixes. If you don’t use your GPS for more than 4 days, the device has to completely rebuild it’s emphemeris data from the satellites and can only obtain a fix by using live data. This explains why it can take several minutes.

Garmin have introduced a new addition to the handheld mapping family – the Colorado series. The series so far consists of 4 systems – the Colorado 300, 400c, 400i and 400t. So far, the 300 is the only one that has been confirmed for Europe, hopefully the other three will follow soon.

The Colorado 300 comes with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and shaded-relief and satellite imagery mapping. The vibrant color 3-inch screen with high resolution is completely visible whether you are in low light areas or you’ve got the sun shining behind you.

Here are a few features that you can look forward to using on the Colorado 300:

Rock ’n Roller™ wheel – this nifty wheel enables users to operate the GPS device with just one hand which is perfect for all you hikers out there!

Wireless – the ability to share your waypoints, tracks, routes and geocaches wirelessly with other Colorado users.

Wherigo – a toolset for creating and playing GPS-enabled adventures in the real world. Use GPS technology to guide you to physical locations and interact with virtual objects and characters.

There are two ways of obtaining this update:

Free update: For those of you who have either purchased or registered your Garmin satnav since 1st December 2007 you are entitled to receive the update DVD free of charge. This free update is only available through Garmin’s website, www.garmin.com. Please note that it is not available from mysatnav. As a conseqence, if you have any questions regarding your eligibilty to receive a free update or how to install the latest maps onto your satnav you will need to contact Garmin directly using the details below. To assist you with the update process we have prepared the following step-by-step tutorial that takes you through the update process. Please also note in order to avail of the free update DVD you must register your satnav on www.garmin.com before 31st May 2008.

Purchasing the update: Anyone who is not entitled to a a free update, in other words those of you who purchased and registered your GPS before 1st December 2007, can purchase an update DVD from ourselves. The Retail Map Update (RMU) disc for City Navigator Europe 2008 can be ordered over the phone on 01-293 6987, and costs €88. Once you receive the disk the process of installing it on to your GPS device will take a couple of hours. An alternative solution for anyone who is not tech savvy is to purchase a pre-programmed SD card which literally slots into the side of your GPS device. Although this is more expensive the advantage is that it will save you time and hassle – City Navigator NT, Ireland & UK and City Navigator NT, Europe

Once you have created your account, the next step is to register your Garmin satnav. Log into your myGarmin.com account, select ‘Product Registration’ and enter all the relevant information regarding your GPS purchase.

Registering a nüvi 3xx or 6xx series: in order to register your system you will need the serial number of your GPS device and the Registration Number – you can find the Registration Number on a yellow sheet of paper that came in your nüvi box.
Registering a nüvi 2xx series: in order to register your system you will need the serial number of your GPS.

Mapsource City Navigator Europe NT v10 Unlock

Installing Mapsource City Navigator Europe NT V10

Once you have received your update DVD, the process of updating your GPS is straightforward. Simply follow the instructions that accompany the DVD.

To summarise, the update DVD installs Mapource City Navigator Europe 2008 (Version 10) onto your PC. Once installed, you will not be able to view the map detail as the maps are ‘locked’. To unlock the maps, open up Mapsource and select the ‘Utilities’ option from the main menu, followed by ‘Unlock Maps…’. This opens up the Mapsource Unlock Wizard. When asked if you have a 25-character unlock code select ‘No, I need to get a 25-character unlock code’. Follow the instructions and log into your myGarmin account on www.garmin.com. Once you have selected your satnav Garmin will supply you with a 25-character unlock code. Once you unlock the maps on your PC using the unlock code, only then should you transfer the new maps to your satnav.

What do I do if I have lost/mislaid the Registration and Unlock codes?

If you previously registered your GPS and received the registration and unlock code you can recover all your details by submitting the email address used to register and unlock your Garmin unit. Garmin will then re-issue your details to that email address.

If you have not registered previously and you have mislaid the yellow sheet you will need to contact Garmin directly explaining that you do not have the codes. You have two options:

call Garmin Techincal Support on 0044 2380 662 902, or

submit an online query to Garmin Product Support

Garmin may request that you provide proof of purchase such as an invoice or sales receipt before they will supply the registration and unlock codes to you.

Please note: Garmin will only re-issue details to the registered owners of Garmin products. Unfortunately mysatnav.ie is unable to obtain the registration or unlock codes on your behalf. You must deal directly with Garmin.
