The SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker
SPOT has been designed specifically for outdoor activities as it is waterproof, shockproof and can operate in extreme temperatures.
It has near worldwide coverage and does not rely on a mobile phone network to send alert/"I'm OK" messages so is suitable in remote locations. It is a relatively inexpensive way to let family and friends know that your are ok when travelling on your adventures and they can even track your progress through a web-based Google map service.
The deivce has an extremely long 2 x AA battery life. This low power consumption does mean however that the GPS receiver in the device is not as sensitive as those in modern handhelds so you need a clear unobstructed view of the sky for SPOT to function correctly and it will take several minutes to acquire a satellite. SPOT can have difficulty acquiring a GPS signal under the cover of trees, in urban areas or where line-of-sight is obstructed.
SPOT is very much a niche product for outdoor pursuits (rather than the tracking of day-to-day activities) but it is a much cheaper alternative to a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).

SPOT features four key functions that enable users to send messages to friends, family or emergency responders, based upon varying levels of need:
- SOS: Dispatch emergency responders to your exact location. SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes until power is depleted or SOS is cancelled.
- Ask for Help: Request help from friends and family in your exact location. SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes for one hour or until Help is cancelled.
- Check In: Let contacts know where you are and that you’re okay. SPOT sends three identical messages to the SPOT service for redundancy. The first of those three messages is delivered.
- Track Progress: Send and save your location and allow contacts to track your progress using Google Maps. SPOT sends one message every 10 minutes for 24 hours or until SPOT is powered off.
Online Service Subscriptions
To operate your SPOT you need to take out an annual subscription online at www.findmespot.com. There are two choices:
Basic Annual Service - €99
- SOS: Dispatch emergency responders to your exact location. Unlimited usage included.
- Check In: Let contacts know where you are and that you're okay. Unlimited Check In emails included. Up to 200 annual Check-In or Help text messages to any mobile phone, worldwide, are also included in the plan. Additional text messages cost €0.10 per message.
- Ask For Help:Request help from friends and family at your exact location. Unlimited Help emails included. Up to 200 annual Check-In or Help text messages to any mobile phone, worldwide, are also included in the plan. Additional text messages cost €0.10 per message.
Annual Tracking - €39
- Unlimited tracking messages, which can then be viewed by friends and family on Google Maps™.
Your SPOT will not operate without a subscription.
Coverage
SPOT works around the world, including virtually all of the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Australia, portions of South America, Northern Africa and Northeastern Asia, and hundreds or thousands of miles off-shore of these areas.
The map shows estimated coverage area. Actual coverage may vary. Success rates are forecasts for a SPOT messenger to successfully deliver a single message during a 20-minute period, based on network availability. Additionally, in everyday conditions it is normal for some messages to be blocked by your environment, such as hills or buildings. That's why the SPOT Messenger is scheduled to automatically send multiple messages in every mode - giving you excellent overall reliability.
