Overview
Friesland, province on the northern coast of the Netherlands, is famous for the Wadden chain of islands: Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, offering plenty to discover with their authentic villages, distinct fauna and flora and of course kilometres of cycling and walking trails. Europe's widest beach can be found there too and some areas are referred to as the Sahara of the north. The Dutch Wadden in the province of Groningen, is the seawall that marks the often indistinct border between sea and land and its salt marshes are an impressive sight. Lauwersmeer National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Further to the south the province Drenthe is home to the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Alkmaar is one of the biggest towns in Noord-Holland, and is home to a 400 year old cheese market.
