Overview
Spain´s capital Madrid is located in the centre of the country and holds a strong position as the economic and cultural hub. Extremely cosmopolitan, the city embraces both its modernity and history. Over 73 museums and a beautiful old town also known as “Madrid de los Austrias", in reference to the Hapsburg Empire, offer cultural activities in abundance. Around the city, the Madrid Sierra Mountain and the plains of Aranjuez and La Mancha prove perfect for a myriad of outdoor activities. The region of Castile-León boasts three World Heritage Cities: Avial, nestled next to the Gredos Sierra; Salamanca, its two cathedrals and renowned university and Segovia, rising above the Eresma and Clamores Rivers. The entire region is surrounded by mountains and offers beautiful hiking routes; the famous Way of Saint James crosses the region West to East.
