Overview
The northern coast of the peninsula is famously known as green Spain. From Galicia through Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Navarre runs contrasting scenery ranging from impressive mountains and extensive forests to craggy coastlines and sandy beaches. The diversity of terrain makes these regions perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Picos de Europa, Spain's very first National Park has an exceptional relief where summits over 2,000 meters alternate with deep gorges and canyons. The River Cares Gorge is one of the most stunning hiking trails. Gorbeia Mountain and Natural Park are a popular Basque Country destination. Santiago de Compostela in Galicia attracts millions of pilgrims every year. Following a route first travelled in the 9th Century, they reach their destination after 140 km: the cathedral in the stunning old town.
